saxophone database of new music
Years ago, when I became interested in contemporary music, I would spend hours searching for pieces that interested me. I soon realized that most of my time was spent bouncing from website to website, link to link. The long process of searching for music resulted in only a few pieces at a time, and often left me discouraged. The type music I was searching for was specific, and was often excluded from existing databases. This frustration led to the creation of the saxophone database of new music.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, and is being constantly updated. If you have piece recommendations for the database, you can submit them using THIS FORM.
I would love to hear about how helpful this database is for you! Please use the contact form on my page to let me know, and give me suggestions on what is missing or can be improved upon!
Each piece has the following information: title, year composed, name of composer (and a link to their website if they have one), # of performers, instrumentation, duration, and whether or not the piece includes electronics.
The requirements of works to be included in the database are as follows:
must be composed in the year 2000 or later
must be composed by someone who is NOT a cis-white man
must include saxophone
may not include more than 8 people
HOW TO USE:
Each field can be sorted by clicking the arrow next to the field you want to sort and selecting “sort...”
There is an additional tab at the top of the page that says ‘composers’ and is grouped by composers so that all of the pieces by the same composer are all in one space. You can find more out about the composer by clicking their name.
Additionally, you can also use the group function at the top of the screen to group certain fields.
I have a few different filtering presets that can be seen if you click “views” in the top left corner. They are as follows: pieces composed after 2015, composers under 30 years old, solos, duets, 3-5 performers, 6-8 performers, includes soprano sax, includes alto sax, includes tenor sax, and includes baritone saxophone.
Clicking “View Larger Version” at the bottom will open the database up in a new tab and might make searching easier!
